El grupo de trabajo se reunió en una serie de teleconferencias quincenales organizadas por Martyn Smith (UC Berkeley) y Lauren Zeise (OEHHA, CalEPA), y la primera llamada se realizó el 21 de abril de 2020. Profesor Lars Lind, Universidad de Uppsala, Suecia fue copresidente con Martyn Smith. El grupo desarrolló 12 características clave (KC) y describió su aplicación a productos químicos ambientales y medicamentos farmacéuticos en Lind y col., 2021.
